On Aug. 16, 2023, the Standing Committee announced a timeline for our bishop search process, with the intention to hold the election on May 18, 2024, and the ordination and consecration of the 17th bishop of the Diocese of Massachusetts on Oct. 19, 2024.
Updates will be made as necessary as the process unfolds.

Bishop Gates announces 2024 retirement, calls for election of his successor
Summer 2023
Nominating Committee is formed, begins work.
Fall 2023
Nominating Committee conducts survey and listening sessions around the diocese, develops profile.
Late fall 2023
Transition Committee is formed.
December 2023
Profile is posted. Nominating period opens.
January 2024
Nominating period ends. Nominating Committee begins review of nominees.
April 2024
Slate is announced. Petition period opens, during which additional nominees may come forward.
Early May 2024
Transition Committee conducts meet-and-greet visits with nominees around the diocese.
