The Rt. Rev. Alan M. Gates, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, offered the following response to the election on May 21 of the Rev. Jeffrey Mello, the rector of St. Paul's Church in Brookline, to be the next bishop of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut:

"The Church in Connecticut has elected a priest with uncommon devotion, passion, and wit. Jeff Mello brings the skillful boundaries of his background in social work, the collegial dedication of his service as a regional dean, and the compassionate heart of a longtime parish priest. We are sorry to see him leave the Diocese of Massachusetts, but our neighbors will be richly blessed!"
