RIP: The Rev. Dr. James Pleasant Breeden

The Office of the Bishop has issued the following notice:

Sept. 28, 2020

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are saddened to inform you of the death of the Rev. Dr. James Pleasant Breeden in Easthampton, Mass., on Sept. 20, 2020.

A lifelong educator and activist, Jim participated in the Freedom Rides in 1961. He was curate at St. John and St. James in Roxbury from 1961 until 1963, and from 1963 until 1965 was Bishop Anson Stokes’s Vicar on Civil Rights in the Diocese of Massachusetts, at the same time serving at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul. He was Director of the Commission on Church and Race of the Massachusetts Council of Churches from 1967 until 1969.

May the soul of God’s faithful servant departed rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon him.
