Two Episcopal churches, St. Andrew’s Church in Hanover and Trinity Church in Rockland, teamed up on May 19 to raise money by "walking to stock" their local food pantries. The pledge walk started in Hanover and ended in Rockland, and followed Route 139 for most of the six miles.
Thirty walkers from both parishes, together with food pantry volunteers, raised about $2,300.
Volunteers from Hanover solicited breakfast donations from Trader Joe's, Walmart and Panera Bread, all located at the Hanover Mall, and Trinity Church provided walkers with a lunch of hamburgers and hotdogs.
"Thank you to the walkers, sponsors and volunteers who kept us hydrated and safe while walking. We look forward to next year and challenge ourselves to increase the numbers of walkers and sponsors," said the Rev. Beth Wheatley-Dyson, Rector of St. Andrew's Church.
The fundraiser is the inspiration of Donna Reed, a parishioner of Trinity Church. “Donna has done this before, and having her energy and her experience behind this effort is just crucial to its success,” the Rev. Sarah Brockmann, Rector of Trinity Church, said before the event. “There’s a lot of legwork that goes into an event like this--seeking sponsors, organizing volunteers, getting permissions. And it’s such an important effort, especially around here. I think all of us know someone who has used the food pantry in the past couple of years, so when we support the food pantry, we’re really supporting our friends and neighbors.”
