“We are delighted to announce the successful completion of our search and the appointment of the Rev. Luther Zeigler as our new chaplain. We look forward with excitement to this new chapter in our common life. Please join us in welcoming Luther to his new ministry at Harvard,” the Board of the Episcopal Chaplaincy at Harvard said in an announcement following its May 15 meeting.
Zeigler comes to Harvard from the Diocese of Washington, where he has been the senior chaplain at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Md., also serving as the chair of the philosophy and religion department at the school and leading its service and outreach programs. He previously served as chaplain at Washington Episcopal School in Bethesda, Md., and taught at the St. Albans School for Boys in Washington, D.C. He has also served as an associate at St. Andrew’s Church in College Park, Md., which has a historic affiliation with the Episcopal-Anglican Campus Ministry at the University of Maryland.
He is a graduate of Oberlin College and Stanford Law School and also holds a master’s degree in religious studies from Stanford University. He completed his theological training at Virginia Theological Seminary. Prior to his ordination, he practiced law for many years in Washington and had an active public service practice, particularly in the areas of civil rights and advocacy on behalf of the homeless.
Zeigler and his wife, Pat, have two adult daughters, one who lives and works in the San Francisco Bay area and another who lives in Boston and works for the Red Sox. The Zeiglers will bring with them to Cambridge their Labradoodle named Grace, who was born six years ago on Easter morning.
