The Rt. Rev. M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, will preach at an interfaith prayer service on the eve of the U.S. Supreme Court's hearing of marriage equality cases on California's Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the latter of which prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex civil marriages in states where it is legal.
The service will take place on Monday, March 25 at 7 p.m. at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul (138 Tremont Street ) in Boston. All are welcome.
Shaw and the Rt. Rev. Gayle E. Harris, Bishop Suffragan of Massachusetts, were among the more than two dozen bishops of the Episcopal Church who filed two briefs in U.S. Supreme Court supporting civil marriage equality for same-sex couples. At the invitation of the Rt. Rev. Marc Handley Andrus, Bishop of the Diocese of California, and Christopher J. Hayes, chancellor of that diocese, bishops across the Episcopal Church joined a broad range of religious groups, organizations and leaders in filings in two historic cases pending in the Supreme Court.
