Before arriving at Canterbury for the Lambeth Conference, Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE spent three days in the Diocese of St. Edmundsbury and Ipswich, part of a pre-Lambeth hospitality initiative. While there, he enjoyed a July 14 visit to the Barnham CEVC Primary School in Suffolk, where the children greeted him with a banner they had made, depicting both the Diocese of Massachusetts’ mission cross symbol and a Massachusetts lighthouse.
Eight other bishops—from Papua New Guinea, Tanzania, South Africa, South India, New Zealand and Canada—were also assigned to the Ipswich diocese and were hosted by its bishop, the Rt. Rev. Nigel Stock, and his wife, Carolyne. “It was a good way to become accustomed to the international life of the Anglican Communion before coming here to Canterbury,” Bishop Shaw wrote in a July 17 e-mail to diocesan clergy.
