Aug. 28, 2023

Dear People of the Diocese of Massachusetts and
Wider Church Community,

With deep sorrow and abundant gratitude I write to share word that the Rt. Rev. Roy F. Cederholm died peacefully last night, Sunday, Aug. 27, in Franklin. Bishop Bud, who served us as bishop suffragan from March 2001 until his retirement in November 2011, is beloved throughout our diocese and beyond. His deep pastoral heart and devotion to congregational life, honed over decades of ministry as a parish priest, continued to characterize his ministry as bishop. Whether supporting clergy and lay leaders, advocating passionately for environmental stewardship, or teaching children a new camp song – in countless ways Bishop Bud was a manifestation of the church’s care for God’s people and the world in which we dwell.

Ruth Ann Cederholm and Bishop Bud have both faced into the challenge of memory loss in recent years. They have been living at an eldercare community, and most recently in memory care together, attended to by caregivers and their devoted sons and family.

Arrangements are underway and will be announced soon for a diocesan celebration of the life and ministry of Bishop Bud Cederholm, and opportunities for tribute and condolence. In the meantime, please hold Ruth Ann, Matt and Dan, and their extended family in your prayers.

We give thanks for this faithful, loving, generous-hearted servant of God. Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him.

Faithfully and fondly,
The Rt. Rev. Alan M. Gates
