After nearly a year, major renovations are still underway at the diocese's Cathedral Church of St. Paul at 138 Tremont Street in Boston, but on Saturday, May 2, everyone is invited to come take a peek inside and make their mark on the newly poured concrete slab that will be the foundation of the new floor.
At the floor-writing event on that day, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., there will be music and snacks, and dozens of Sharpie markers of all colors so that everyone, of all ages, can come and make a permanent mark on the concrete by writing a name, a message of thanks for someone, a favorite Bible verse or poem, or by drawing a picture of hope.
All the markings will be ultimately known only to God as they will be covered by granite floor tiles, to be installed soon afterward. The new floor tiles will be inscribed with the names, dates and towns of the congregations of the diocese, past and present.
The event is a way to thank the diocese for its support, the cathedral's dean, the Very Rev. Jep Streit, says in this video invitation. "It also makes clear what I believe to be true, that the cathedral belongs to everyone, not just those of us who worship here on Sundays," Streit says.
