Campus & Young Adult Ministry

Young people are the future of the Episcopal Church, so Bishop Shaw and the diocese have made strengthening campus and young adult ministries a priority. There are currently 6 campus ministries in the diocese, with plans to establish more in the next 5-10 years.

The Future

At its annual convention in November, 2003, the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts presented a goal of establishing five new campus ministries at colleges and universities in the Diocese, as a critical part of a 10-year strategy for building stronger congregations, a stronger sense of stewardship and greater evangelism in its communities. The plan for achieving this goal includes:

  • Establishing criteria for selecting sites in eastern Massachusetts
  • Evaluating the potential for ministry of selected sites
  • Identifying and evaluating potential models for developing the campus ministries
  • Identifying parishes that would collaborate in ministry or funding of the sites
  • Developing a plan for evaluating existing and future chaplaincies
  • Identifying human resources and allies

The Boston College and Framingham State College ministries are the first fruits of this effort.
