Greetings!
It's finally
spring, a time of renewal, and that seems to be
a theme this month: All Saints' Church in West
Newbury renewing after a split in the
congregation, Bishop Shaw urging the legislature
to renew and revise the CORI laws, Marcus Borg
helping us to renew our storytelling about
Jesus, Mother Earth calling us to renew a
respectful relationship with her and Fall River
churches renewing themselves by uniting with
each other.
May
you enjoy some renewal of your
own!

Governor, bishop urge
CORI reform; Wareham rector testifies against
casino gambling
Bishop Shaw testifies. Image: Maria
Plati Bishop Tom Shaw preached
about healing ministries in a Holy Tuesday
sermon at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul and
hours later carried the message to the State
House in testimony supporting reform of the
Criminal Offender Record Information system.
CORI records can block individuals' access to
housing, education and employment, in some cases
for misdemeanors, non-convictions or dismissed
cases.
"I reminded those present this
morning, and I remind you now, that it's not
only the physically ill among us who need
restoration and care, but also those who suffer
inwardly because of mistakes they have made or
crimes they have committed," Shaw told the
Legislature's Judiciary Committee following
testimony earlier in the day by Governor Deval
Patrick.

Later
that day, the Rev. David Fredrickson of the
Church of the Good Shepherd in Wareham testified
before the Joint Committee on Emerging
Technologies and Economic Development to oppose
the Governor's bill to allow casino gambling in
Massachusetts. Fredrickson helped lead the
successful effort to pass a resolution opposing
expansion of casino gambling at last November's
Diocesan Convention. The Massachusetts Council
of Churches had waged a 2½-year campaign
against the legislation.

Learning event with
Marcus Borg readies Holy Week
evangelists
Marcus Borg addresses the appreciative
crowd at the diocesan spring learning
event. Image: Tim
Kinnel Some 400 people gathered
at Boston University on March 15, the eve of
Holy Week, to hear New Testament scholar Marcus
Borg talk about how to talk about
Jesus.
"The story of Jesus is the most
important story I know, and it matters greatly
how we tell it," Borg said. "An
understanding of Christianity that was very
common a generation or two ago has become
unpersuasive to many people in our
time."

It's Earth Day: Give
thanks and take action Efforts led by Bishop Bud
Cederholm to encourage prayer, prophetic action
and public advocacy on behalf of God's creation
have brought in several hundred signatures from
Episcopalians across the diocese for the
Massachusetts Interfaith Pledge for Climate
Action. And, the diocese's Youth
Leadership Academy (YLA) students are lending
their hands, gathering signatures for the pledge
and encouraging others to further
action.

Organizers say there is
still time to join the effort in the days
leading up to Earth Day (April 22). They
suggest calls to legislators and Governor
Patrick's office (617-725-4005) to urge support
for the Global Warming Solutions Act. It
mandates an economywide emissions cap and energy
policies that support energy efficiency and
renewable energy investment.

"You are in the business
of changing the world."

Ministry, Andrew and the Expressions and Street

Chrysostom's celebration of ethnic and cultural
diversity in Quincy. Image: Tim

"You are in the business of changing the
world," State Representative Byron Rushing told
the 150 people who gathered at the Marriott in
Quincy on March 13 to celebrate that city's
ethnic and cultural diversity and to honor two
community leaders.
Rushing's speech moved the crowd to its feet.
The legislator, a member of St. John St. James
Church in Roxbury, observed that it has taken a
long time for "we the people" to apply to
everyone and for everyone to realize that, "We
are in the 'we.'"
The event was sponsored by the Parish of St.
Chrysostom, with its rector, the Rev. David
Hefling, serving as the evening's emcee. Senior
warden William Messmer and Quincy mayor Thomas
Koch gave the welcoming remarks.
