On Sunday, August 27, at 4 p.m., Saint Anne's Episcopal Church in Lowell will be hosting a "Katrina Anniversary Gospel Concert" to celebrate what has been done since the hurricane and to continue to reach out to those still affected during the aftermath. This concert is open to the public.

Aug. 29 marks the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s devastating landfall in the Gulf Coast of the United States. The diocesan Task Force for Gulf Coast Partnerships (formerly known as the Hurricane Katrina Relief Task Force) reminds us that there is still a great need for help. Learn more about any of the upcoming opportunities described below at www.diomass.org.

Fall mission trips: Join one of two mission trips to New Orleans during the week of Oct. 8-14: one is a general work trip for adults, who will help clean, paint and restore hurricane-affected homes; the other will be a medical mission trip organized by Samaritans Now, a newly formed diocesan medical relief effort. The Samaritans are seeking medical professionals to serve on the first mission team in October, and hope to send teams of medical volunteers for one week each month over the next year to New Orleans or Biloxi, Miss.

“Let’s Eat Shrimp for Mississippi”: This southern-style fundraiser takes place Sunday, Oct. 1, from 4-7 p.m., at the Parish of the Epiphany (70 Church Street) in Winchester. The event is part of Lutheran Episcopal Services of Mississippi’s campaign to boost the Mississippi shrimping industry, which was adversely affected by Hurricane Katrina. Come enjoy Gulf Coast shrimp, hot dogs and corn on the cob to the music of a Dixieland jazz band.

It’s not too early to plan holiday giving: The task force’s “Gifts from the Heart” program collects and distributes merchandise gift cards that you purchase at selected retailers and then send in with an attached personal note of support and encouragement. Writing these notes is a great activity for children. You can also donate online by visiting diomass.org and clicking "Donate Now.”
One of our diocese’s mission goals is that every congregation will be in partnership with another church or organization in the Anglican Communion. Toward that end, two mission trips are being planned for 2007: one to El Salvador in June 2007 with Bishop Tom Shaw and one to Tanzania in August 2007 with Bishop Bud Cederholm.

“The purpose of these diocesan-sponsored mission trips is to create a base of leaders in the diocese with the confidence and vision to build and support global mission activities,” explains the Rev. Ted Gaiser, a deacon and the coordinator of mission partnership development in the diocese. “When we allow ourselves to experience life from a different world view, we have no choice but to be changed by the encounter. Through transformative experiences, we learn new things about our world, ourselves and our God.”

There is an application process for those interested in joining one of these two trips. For all the details, visit www.missiongoal.org (or click the "Application" Quick Link in the above left column) before Friday, Oct. 6, which is the application deadline.
Commenting July 28 on the unfolding developments in the Middle East, the Episcopal Church’s presiding bishop, Frank Griswold, said, “While much of the world’s focus is understandably on the disaster in Lebanon, we cannot forget the continuing humanitarian crisis for Palestinians in Gaza.” (For the full story from Episcopal News Service, visit www.episcopalchurch.org/ens.) “Reports from the Anglican hospital in Gaza, Ahli Arab, are devastating,” Griswold said. Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) has sent $25,000 to the hospital; ERD is also assisting thousands of people affected by the violence in Lebanon by working with groups such as Action by Churches Together, the Middle East Council of Churches and the Inter Church Network for Development and Relief in Lebanon to provide emergency supplies, including food and medicine.

Learn how to join other Episcopalians in ERD’s efforts at www.er-d.org.

The National Council of Churches has launched an interactive Web page where persons of all faiths can add their prayers for peace. Visit www.seasonofprayer.org, or find the link at www.diomass.org on the “Peace Resources” page under “Spiritual Life.”
Now online is a full fall schedule of diocesan learning opportunities and resources for equipping one another, youth and adults, for joining God’s mission in the world through the ministries we carry out in our congregations and in our daily lives: youth retreats, Safe Church training sessions, and numerous workshops, seminars and discussion series on education resources, congregational development, support for journeying by faith and working for social justice. Find them all at www.diomass.org/pdfs/LearnEventsFall06.pdf. Diocesan events also appear by date on the diomass.org General Calendar.
Steel drumming by the Crystal Panjammers, inspired preaching by Rep. Byron Rushing and great island food is promised on Sept. 10 at the annual Caribbean Festival at St. Stephen’s Church in Lynn.

“Christ in earth and sky and sea, in stone and tree, and in the wildness of creation”: Join with other seekers at this Celtic Spirituality Retreat, Sept. 22- 23, at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans.

“Beat the heat, get your brain scratched, have a brew and meet other thoughtful people” at Ockham’s Kegger gatherings, sponsored by the Church of the Advent in Boston on Monday evenings at The Harp (85 Causeway Street) in Boston.

Learn about services, forums, concerts and outreach projects offered at an Episcopal church near you on the Parish Circuit section of our Web site or click the Quick Link in the above left column. Post your congregation’s events by emailing the Webmaster (address is on the Parish Circuit page).
Diocesan Web site users proved this past week that patience is indeed a virtue, and the site’s administrators thank you. Technical difficulties resulting from unexpected ISP maintenance meant that diomass.org was MIA for a few days (some of you may even have found yourselves redirected last Tuesday to Tone-on-Tone.com, a lovely antiques site). Rest assured: Like many Episcopalians at summer’s end, diomass.org is back from its adventures abroad and ready to serve.

Spread the word! Forward E-News to your fellow parishioners, family, friends and seekers and let them know they can sign up for future issues at: www.diomass.org/elist.shtml.
